Dhurandhar: The Underdog Blockbuster That Redefined Box Office Success

The fictional Indian film Dhurandhar has become a major topic of online discussion, with audiences closely examining its box office dominance, political messaging, and symbolic storytelling. Across Reddit discussions and fan communities, the film is being viewed not just as a commercial success but as a cultural phenomenon that has sparked debate, admiration, and detailed analysis.

As of its 28th day in theatres, Dhurandhar has collected ₹1150+ crore worldwide, making it the 6th highest-grossing Indian film of all time and the 2nd highest-grossing Bollywood film ever, behind only Dangal. In the process, it surpassed Jawan’s worldwide total of ₹1148 crore. Only Dangal, Baahubali 2, Pushpa 2, RRR, and KGF 2 currently rank above it, with commentators predicting that Dhurandhar may soon overtake KGF 2 and possibly RRR.

What makes this achievement exceptional is that Dhurandhar was released only in Hindi. Unlike many competitors that relied on multiple dubbed versions, the film still set historic domestic records. It became the first Hindi film to earn over ₹100 crore in India net collections for four consecutive weeks and the first Indian film to maintain double-digit daily earnings for 25 straight days. It also recorded the biggest 4th Friday and highest 3rd Sunday for a Hindi film, eventually dethroning Jawan as the highest-grossing Bollywood film in India.

Internationally, the film succeeded despite major limitations. Due to its sensitive themes and perceived anti-Pakistan stance, Dhurandhar was banned in Gulf countries and not released in China, unlike films such as Dangal which earned heavily from those markets. Even so, it set all-time Bollywood records in North America and Australia.

Beyond numbers, Dhurandhar ignited political debate. Critics called it propaganda, while supporters defended it as a realistic portrayal of terrorism. Fans also analyzed character details, such as protagonist Hamza’s constant eating, interpreting it as a symbol of trauma, survival, and a longing for humanity.

With over 3 crore footfalls, Dhurandhar has not only rewritten box office expectations for single-language films but has also built massive anticipation for Dhurandhar 2, which is expected to challenge future opening day records.
