High Out-of-Pocket Expenses for TB Patients Despite Free Care

A recent study has revealed that tuberculosis (TB) patients in India face out-of-pocket expenses of up to ₹32,000, despite the government offering free diagnosis and treatment under its national TB program.

The costs stem from indirect expenses such as travel, lost wages, and nutritional supplements necessary for recovery. These financial burdens disproportionately affect economically weaker sections, undermining efforts to eliminate TB as a public health issue.

Experts emphasize the need for comprehensive support systems, including nutritional aid and financial assistance, to ensure patients can complete their treatment without financial distress. Programs like the Nikshay Poshan Yojana, which provides ₹500 per month to TB patients, must be expanded to address the hidden costs of treatment.

Addressing these challenges is essential to achieving India’s goal of ending TB by 2025. A multi-pronged approach involving medical, social, and economic interventions is key to combating this age-old disease.
